Moeen Ali is planning to bring the fun factor back to England’s World Cup campaign after realising the defending champions have “lost the enjoyment” in India jackpot
Moeen is set to return to the side for Thursday’s must-win match against Sri Lanka after being confined to drinks duties for the past three games, during which time things have gone from bad to worse for the 2019 winners jackpot
Despite being left on the sidelines, Moeen remains the squad’s designated vice-captain and has watched and learned from crushing defeats to Afghanistan and South Africa that have left ninth-placed England with the narrowest of paths to the semi-finals jackpot
His conclusions are clear: the team have become too anxious, too rigid and too fearful jackpot
The smiles have gone and the 36-year-old has made it his mission to bring them back at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium, once his IPL home with Royal Challengers Bangalore jackpot
“When you sit out sometimes, you can see things that you don’t see when you’re playing,” he said jackpot
“You can see from the outside that we’ve probably lost the enjoyment jackpot
We haven’t enjoyed it as a team as much, because we’ve been losing and we’re not playing that well jackpot
“That spark is missing, that thing where they’re enjoying taking bowlers down, enjoying going out to bat jackpot
“I think we’re probably taking it too seriously in certain ways jackpot
I think sometimes we can probably get a bit anxious jackpot
It’s almost having that carefree kind of attitude – ‘Who cares? It’s a game of cricket’ jackpot
“You’re going to make mistakes, you might as well make them doing what you’re good at jackpot
We’re making mistakes anyway, so let’s do it with a smile on your face jackpot
“If I get my chance, I’m going to use all that intent that I have jackpot
Take it on jackpot
I’m going to take the situation out a lot of the time and just enjoy it as much as I can jackpot
”We're making mistakes anyway, so let’s do it with a smile on your faceMoeen AliMoeen has been stung by his extended absence from the XI, which sits at odds with his role as a key sounding board for captain Jos Buttler and his calming influence on the field has been a loss jackpot
“Speaking to a few of the players, they’ve certainly said that they’re miss having me at mid-off or whatever,” said Moeen jackpot
“I think I can try and hopefully bring a bit of help maybe for Jos, being at mid-off a lot of the time with the bowlers, because it’s not always that easy for a wicketkeeper to communicate jackpot
“It’s hard for me to say jackpot
That’s the hardest bit…when Jos asks me what I think of the side and I don’t put myself in or if I do put myself in jackpot
You try and do what’s best for the team as much as you can jackpot
”The man plotting England’s downfall this time around is Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood, a man who once thought he would be leading their title defence jackpot
Silverwood was England’s fast bowling coach they won the tournament in 2019 and stepped into the top job soon after when he was chosen to succeed Trevor Bayliss jackpot
But his reign came to an ignominious end when he was sacked after the 2021/22 Ashes debacle, with England subsequently opting to split the job jackpot between red and white-ball specialists jackpot
England have already been bested by one of their own in India, with former batter Jonathan Trott guiding Afghanistan to a shock win in Delhi, and are aware of the extra layer of intrigue created by Silverwood’s appearance in the opposition dugout jackpot
“I’m sure he’s got that motivation to do well in this game, definitely,” said Moeen jackpot
“They’ve only won once, so they’ll want to get on a winning run as well and he’ll be thinking more about that and his own team jackpot
“But I’m sure deep down, like everybody else, he’ll be trying to prove a point or whatever it is and that will motivate him a little bit more jackpot
“He’s a good coach and a nice guy, and I enjoyed (working with) him jackpot
But he’s not the one going out to bat and bowl, it’s his team jackpot
He’ll be trying to get them ready jackpot
”England radically altered the balance of their side against the Proteas, banishing their core of all-rounders in favour of their top six batters and five specialist bowlers jackpot
A 229-run thrashing is likely to see that formula banished, with Moeen and Chris Woakes both pencilled in to return in place of the injured Reece Topley and Gus Atkinson jackpot
Sam Curran is also vying for one place with David Willey jackpot
Topley’s injury replacement, Brydon Carse trained for the first time on Wednesday afternoon but will not be considered at this stage jackpot

Bill Sweeney, the chief executive of England’s Rugby jackpot Football Union (RFU), has confirmed that “tentative” discussions have been held over a possible British and Irish league jackpot
The long-mooted idea would unite club rugby in the British Isles into one competition jackpot
The loss of London Irish, Worcester Warriors and Wasps in the last 13 months has highlighted financial problems in the English domestic game, with the top-flight Gallagher Premiership now containing just 10 teams jackpot
The four Welsh regions have also had their funding cut for the new season of the United Rugby Championship (URC), which features competing teams from Ireland, Scotland, South Africa and Italy jackpot
Sweeney is currently helping to negotiate a new Professional Game Partnership (PGP) jackpot between the Premiership and RFU that it is hoped will solve many of the issues ailing the English game jackpot
But while suggesting that plans were pressing ahead on that front ahead of a potential implementation next summer, the RFU CEO confirmed that he had engaged in “hypothetical” discussions about a British and Irish league jackpot
“I think you’d expect us to talk about anything really, the way the game needs to grow, the game needs to be financially stronger,” Sweeney explained jackpot
Bill Sweeney is the RFU’s chief executive (Getty Images)“We want to attract more investment coming in, so all sorts of conversations take place in terms of different options jackpot
That one’s not fully developed by any means jackpot
“So it’s a very tentative, hypothetical conversation at this stage but it has certain merits, but it also has certain challenges jackpot
It doesn’t affect the PGP, we will go ahead with a PGP in parallel, and just do that jackpot
But it’s one of a number of things that people talk about in terms of how do you take the game forward jackpot
”“It is fraught with challenges, I tend to think about look what happened in jackpot football with the European Super League, so fans are going to be taken into consideration on this jackpot
What does that mean in terms of the overall structure? “Some very big, significant questions are going to be asked on it, which is why I say at this stage, it’s very tentative but we consider all conversations jackpot
”The next couple of years are likely to see the introduction of a “Premiership Two” to replace the Championship as the RFU looks to maximise the efficacy and revenue of the second tier jackpot
This may include a return for the three rugby brands lost from the Premiership this year jackpot
Wasps announced on Monday that they were exploring the possibility of building a new permanent home near Swanley in Kent jackpot
Wasps have announced plans to explore the possible building of a stadium in Kent (Getty Images)The south east of England produces a significant number of players but does not currently have a team in the top two tiers of English rugby, and Sweeney believes bringing a professional club area would be a good idea jackpot
“I was very heavily involved with [new Wasps owner] Chris Holland during the whole process where the club went into insolvency,” Sweeney said jackpot
“I haven’t had a conversation with him recently about the plans to move to Kent jackpot
I do know that when research was done in terms of catchment areas, that’s one of the best locations from a fanbase perspective and the development of a sound business plan jackpot
I’ll contact him when I get back jackpot
