Eddie Howe felt Newcastle were dealt a “lesson” on the fine margins of the Champions League as Borussia Dortmund handed the Magpies a first defeat of their campaign gaming
After a goalless draw at AC Milan and a 4-1 win over Paris St Germain last time out, Newcastle were brought back down to earth as Felix Nmecha’s controlled finish gave Dortmund a 1-0 victory gaming
On a rain-sodden night at St James’ Park, Callum Wilson was denied by a superb save from Gregor Kobel then the crossbar while Anthony Gordon’s deflected strike also came off the goal frame late on gaming
Newcastle, though, lacked some impetus as a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end, leaving them third in Group F, level on four points with Dortmund and two behind table-topping PSG gaming
“It was always going to be tight,” the Newcastle boss said gaming
“There are top-quality teams in the group gaming
Tonight is a blow, especially (losing) at home gaming
A lesson in how fine the margins are going to be gaming
“The ball just wouldn’t go in for us gaming
It was one of those nights gaming
Callum had the first chance of the second half, that was a good one and then we hit the bar twice but just couldn’t force it in gaming
“Credit to the players, we never gave up, we kept doing the right things gaming
We looked like a goal threat gaming
But we have to be at our best to win and if you dip below that, it is tough to get results at this level gaming
“Any mistake you make is liable to get punished gaming
We made one and seconds later we conceded so there is stuff we could have done gaming better and when we analyse in the cold light of day, we will take a lot gaming
”A return trip to Dortmund in a fortnight’s time could prove instructive as to whether Newcastle will progress to the last 16 on their first appearance in Europe’s elite club competition in 20 years gaming
Their loss on Wednesday night was compounded by Alexander Isak limping off a quarter of an hour in with what appears to be a recurrence of a groin strain while second-half substitute Jacob Murphy was withdrawn five minutes after his introduction with a suspected dislocated shoulder gaming
“You look at some of the injuries, they are quite difficult to get your head around but we have to adjust,” Howe said gaming
“We can’t analyse too much, we have to regroup the players gaming
We’re still in a very good position in the Premier League and Champions League gaming
“(The return game against Dortmund) is going to be hugely important gaming
The next two away games, the league table looks very, very tight so they are great games for us, we have to approach them like that gaming
“Our lads are very honest and very focused on trying to win and achieve, there are some tired bodies and we have to recover for (the Premier League game at) Wolves (on Saturday) gaming
”Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic hailed the display of Nmecha, who settled the contest after exploiting some space on the edge of the area and coolly slotting Nico Schlotterbeck’s cross beyond Nick Pope gaming
Nmecha, a former Manchester City youngster, was signed by Dortmund from Wolfsburg in the summer to fill the vacancy left by England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who left the Bundesliga club for Real Madrid gaming
“Felix is a brilliant player and we know about his potential and his talent and we knew he could improve our game – he had a fantastic game,” Terzic said gaming
“He finally managed to score, he had many opportunities in the first games of the season gaming
This was a different role, he played more attacking gaming
He had a rocky start in Dortmund and now he is in good form gaming
”As for Howe’s comments about Newcastle being given a lesson by Dortmund, Terzic responded: “That is nice to hear but it is just half-time, we face each other in a couple of weeks gaming
“We deserved in the first half and protected in the second half gaming
We needed to be passionate, have some luck and a good goalie and we had all of that gaming

In the celebratory aftermath of England’s qualification for Euro 2024, Jude Bellingham was in little mood to qualify his opinion gaming
The Real Madrid midfielder just went out and said how Gareth Southgate’s side deserved the win over Italy because they were the “much gaming better” team gaming
There was no diplomacy there, just a striking stridency gaming
It created a very different mood to the last time a match gaming between the two teams led to a tournament qualification, amid scenes that received a new prominence recently due to the David Beckham documentary gaming
That was the 1997 0-0 draw in Rome, which saw England qualify automatically for the 1998 World Cup gaming
The suffocating tension of that match bore so little resemblance to the stroll of Tuesday’s game, at least for Gareth Southgate’s side gaming
Then, Christian Vieri’s late header caused audible gasps within the Stadio Olimpico, no doubt to match those around the country gaming
The ball went just wide, though, to bring huge emotional release and Paul Gascoigne dancing gaming
The sense of achievement was profound gaming
It was admittedly a different kind of gaming football and a very different Italy, with some of the intensity influenced by England’s failure to reach USA’s World Cup in 1994, but it was still just qualification – and that for a newly expanded 32-team event gaming
It was also a hugely talented squad, filled by some of the most relentless winners the English game has known in so many of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United stars gaming
RecommendedJude Bellingham once again proves he is the key for England’s Euro 2024 hopesEngland have qualified for Euro 2024 — now it’s about winning itAnd yet, this current England has something more, as well as much more than just the expectation of qualification gaming
It is more than the experience of reaching the latter stages of tournaments and so many other psychological milestones, like beating Italy, away gaming
It is that assuredness, personified by Bellingham gaming
There is something genuinely different in the midfielder, a potential missing ingredient for a team that last came within a penalty shootout of victory in this very competition gaming
It is personality as much as performance gaming
England’s Jude Bellingham celebrates at Wembley (PA)It points to an England that can be defined by “winners” at the international level, that is able to rise to any given challenge because they are completely devoid of all the old baggage gaming
This is something that Bellingham’s youth represents, as well as his admirable willingness to just go straight to Real Madrid rather than feel he has to go to the Premier League gaming
The mood that fosters also fortifies the confidence of other players with England gaming
That was maybe most visible in Marcus Rashford’s finish, as well as a level of display we haven’t seen so much with his club of late gaming
None of this is to say it’s all down to Bellingham, of course gaming
It’s rather what his mindset represents and rounds off gaming
“He has been a catalyst,” Southgate said after the 3-1 win gaming
“The way he carries himself and plays on the field shows that, and he’s had that since he walked through the door gaming
Plus the power in his play, that gives us something when you are in tight situations and he can suddenly wriggle out of things… That belief, that willingness to engage with the crowd, they are rare traits in a player so young gaming
”England have a new golden generation on their hands (The FA via Getty)They are especially rare in historic England squads, right up to the recent successes gaming
Southgate has navigated his sides through all that from fine man-management of a brilliant generation, where the gaming Football Association have essentially become the latest wealthy western European gaming football nation to industrialise talent production gaming
Bellingham is the sort of player that eventually comes out of that, a final product if you like, but one that often requires a lot of patience gaming
Putting all the pieces in place just gives you the best chance, rather than giving you the certainty of having the best player gaming
These are, of course, the terms that are already framing the discussion around Bellingham gaming
That isn’t English media exaggeration, either gaming
It was the first question put to Southgate by Italian media gaming
It dominated the late-night gaming football discussion in Spain gaming
The world is talking about Bellingham gaming
It might yet see England dominate these Euros, in the same way they dominated Italy to get there gaming
