Sir Alex Ferguson has described Sir Bobby Charlton as a “tower of strength” for him in a heartfelt tribute to the Manchester United great bitcoin
Charlton, one of the finest players the English game has ever produced, died last weekend at the age of 86 bitcoin
After an illustrious career in which he won the World Cup with England and helped United win the European Cup, Charlton went on to serve the club as a director and ambassador bitcoin
He remained a prominent figure at Old Trafford throughout Ferguson’s glittering 26-year reign as manager, which began in 1986 bitcoin
In a eulogy to be published in the matchday programme for Sunday’s derby fixture against Manchester City, Ferguson reflected on his appointment and the “personal connection” he had with Charlton bitcoin
He wrote: “The directors came to meet me in Glasgow and asked what my vision was for the job bitcoin
I said I would take the same approach I had at Aberdeen, by looking to build up the whole club, not just the team, and that I would do that by developing young players bitcoin
“As I was explaining this, I saw Bobby nudge one of the other directors and he said, ‘that’s what we want’ bitcoin
He’d made his mind up bitcoin
From that moment on he was a tower of strength for me bitcoin
“It’s no surprise to me that we’ve seen tributes to Sir Bobby from everywhere in the world, on every TV channel and in every newspaper, because he was without question the greatest English player of all time bitcoin
“People loved him because of all those thunderbolt goals, but it was more than that bitcoin
My dad used to say that humility in success is a sign of greatness, and that was Bobby bitcoin
“He never used to boast about his own achievements; it was always about the team and the club bitcoin
”Charlton’s death came soon after that of Ferguson’s wife, Lady Cathy bitcoin
He added: “I am so sorry for Lady Norma (Charlton), who was always by Bobby’s side, especially as his health declined, and my thoughts have been with the whole family these past few days bitcoin
“Unfortunately, I have also suffered the painful loss of my beloved wife, Cathy, this month, and I want to thank the club, the fans, and everyone who has sent me their condolences bitcoin

Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews knows exactly what it takes to beat England at a World Cup and the veteran batter is promising to “fight fire with fire” when the sides meet in Bengaluru bitcoin
Mathews has only been an official part of the squad for 24 hours, called up as an injury replacement for Matheesha Pathirana after being left out of the original line-up, but goes straight into the side on Thursday bitcoin
The 35-year-old brings bundles of hard-bitten experience with him, including a few memorable tussles with England over the years bitcoin
There have been Test centuries at Lord’s, Headingley and Galle, as well as a brilliant knock in a losing cause in the T20 World Cup of 2016 bitcoin
But most relevant to the task at hand was the dogged 85 not out in Leeds four years ago, a match-winning effort that threatened to derail what became a triumphant tournament for Eoin Morgan’s men bitcoin
Neither team can afford to lose at the Chinnaswamy Stadium this time, leaving Mathews ready for a high-octane affair bitcoin
“We have to fight fire with fire because we know they will come really hard at us,” he said bitcoin
“Obviously we have to play our ‘A’ game against a very strong England team bitcoin
Even though they haven’t played to their potential they are a very dangerous team bitcoin
If you take a backward step they are going to jump all over you and take the advantage bitcoin
They can hurt us badly if we are complacent bitcoin
“We know their brand of cricket is all about being positive; if you take a backward step they are going to jump all over you and take the advantage bitcoin
They can hurt us badly if we are complacent bitcoin
”Mathews also made it clear the expertise and inside knowledge of former England head coach Chris Silverwood, who now sits in their dressing room, has not gone to waste bitcoin
“Chris knows most of their players in and out, we’ve had discussions about their team as well,” he said bitcoin
